How To Transition To Clean Beauty

With the nature of my job, it's very easy to accumulate an excess of products that are sent my way for testing and consideration, even with turning down a lot of product samples. On top of that, I've been a product junkie for almost 10 years, so I definitely purchase my fair share of products too.

I already feel that I'm mindful with the food choices I put in my body (I've been vegan for almost three years!), but I'm going to focus more now on what I'm putting on my body by transitioning into more clean beauty and skincare products. I think it will take a while to make a full transition, because I don't want to be wasteful and throw out a majority of my existing products, and I also don't want to spend a ton of money at once by replacing everything.

If you’re also looking to make a transition to cleaner products, I’d suggest starting with your toothpaste and deodorant. Skin is the largest organ on our body, and toothpaste (obviously) goes in your mouth, so using high quality non-toxic products will definitely make a difference. I love Tom’s of Maine products (deodorant, toothpaste) because all the ingredients in each product are broken down with their purposes on their website.

On that note, “green washing” is a huge problem in the food and beauty industry. Did you know that there’s no standard for what can be labeled natural at the grocery store or on the beauty shelves? Look out for ingredients, because that’s the #1 sign of what’s actually going into your product.

For now, the transition is going to be slow, and I'll replace existing products with cleaner alternatives as I move through them, but I'm really excited to begin trying out some new products!

At the bottom of this post you’ll find some resources, podcasts, blog posts, and clean beauty shops so you can continue to expand your knowledge beyond this post.

Disclaimer: Obviously I’m not perfect and not everything I’m sharing here is the cleanest possible, but it’s a start and I’m proud of myself for making the changes that I have.

Summer Fridays Overtime Mask: I’ve been obsessed with the Jet Lag Mask for the past several months, so I obviously had to try Overtime when it launched earlier this month. It is clarifying and exfoliating, plus it’s perfect for fall (it smells like pumpkin)!

Herbivore Botanicals Prism Potion: I love all the products I’ve tried from Herbivore (Blue Tansy Mask, Lapis Facial Oil, Rose Hibiscus Mist, Jasmine Green Tea Toner), but this is my latest addition and a total game-changer. This chemical exfoliant is perfect when your skin is feeling textured or you’re breaking out, I would just only use this at night since it is an exfoliant.

Briogeo Be Gentle Be Kind Kale + Apple Replenishing Superfood Conditioner: Like with Herbivore and Summer Fridays, I’m absolutely in love with the other Briogeo products I’ve tried (Scalp Revival Treatment, Rosarco Blow Dry Perfection Crème). This conditioner is so cute, smells fantastic, and super hydrating for my hair.

Kopari Coconut Lip Glossy: Squalane, shea butter, and of course coconut oil make up this super hydrating and glossy lip hydrator without leaving your lips sticky. A total win-win, plus it’s available in two shades in addition to the OG clear.

Farmacy Sheet Masks: Anytime I can get a hydrogel sheet mask, I’m so about it. The Farmacy masks are infused with coconut water and are ultra-effective, perfect to deliver fast and real results.

Pacifica Sheet Masks: If you’re looking to get more clean beauty in your life, but are on a budget, definitely give Pacifica a go. All of their sheet masks are under $4 (you can usually get a deal of some kind at Ulta or Target), and definitely get the job done as well as more expensive masks.

Tata Harper Resurfacing Serum: I’ve tried out a few other Tata Harper products in the past, but when I got this deluxe sample with purchase at Sephora, I totally fell in love and will definitely be grabbing the full size soon. It smells heavenly and works wonders to improve the texture and brightness of your skin.

Drunk Elephant Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defense: Again, love all the Drunk Elephant products I’ve tried out (T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial, C-Firma Day Serum, T.L.C. Framboos Glycolic Night Serum), but this is definitely one of my favorites. I rarely wear makeup except for events and occasions (work from home life), but this sunscreen is an obvious must for every day.

Youth to the People Superfood Cleanser: I’ve used this on and off for a few years, and recently switched back and am so glad I did. It’s not dehydrating or stripping, and leaves your skin feeling hydrated and clean.
